Therapist Reacts to ENCANTO
What do you do when you're feeling pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop? How do you handle the pressure -- from yourself or other people in your life -- to be perfect or to live up to expectations? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright take a look at the theme of toxic perfectionism in Disney's Encanto. They talk about how to handle the pressure, how to heal family relationships, how to look past our assumptions about people, and how to accept yourself and the people in your life for who you are. And about how Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius, the amazing artistry in this film, and a whole lot more. But not Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno. Pssst... we talked about Bruno in another video: https://youtu.be/jAJsrkGgtjg Support us! Psychology of a Hero: BLACK WIDOW
Can someone actually get red out of their ledger? Can they repair their wrongs and find healing? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright talk about Natasha Romanoff's (Black Widow's) journey to try to get red out of her ledger, as she moves from assassin to hero to healer. They discuss how we can each right some of the wrongs in our lives and make changes and amends. For Natasha it included becoming an Avenger, dedicating her life to helping people (like freeing the other widows, including her sister Yelena played absolutely brilliantly by Florence Pugh), and eventually finding peace with herself and giving her life. Thanks for making Alan cry again, ScarJo. And for giving him an opportunity to go toe-to-toe with David Harbour to compare their Russian accents and beards. Support us! Villain Therapy: HARLEY QUINN and Histrionic Personality Disorder
Why is Harley Quinn often doing things to get attention? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright, along with editor, producer, and frequent guest Sophie Tellez, discuss the psychology behind Harley Quinn, why she acts the way she does, and why people love Margot Robbie's portrayal of this villain (anti-hero?). Movie Couples Therapy: The Phantom of the Opera
Use code CINEMATHERAPY60 to get 60% off your first Factor box at https://bit.ly/3UR66TS! What is the difference between lust and love? Or between obsession and love? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright use the relationships in The Phantom of the Opera to talk about healthy and unhealthy relationships. They take a look at the possessive, obsessive, controlling nature of the relationship between the Phantom and Christine, and how the Phantom takes advantage of her grief and her naivety. Then they contrast that with Christine's relationship with Raoul, and how that one doesn't start in the best place (Raoul doesn't really listen to her at first...) but grows into a healthier relationship about sharing a life together. They also talk about how Emmy Rossum is a fantastic Christine, Minnie Driver is delightful, and they, um... disagree about Gerard Butler and some of the filmmaking choices. Support us! Therapist Reacts to THE BAD GUYS
Are the bad guys naturally bad or are they socialized that way? Have you ever been given a second chance? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Ocean's Eleven for kids, The Bad Guys! They discuss why the bad guys never had a chance to be good but how they warm up to the idea of change for the better. Jono analyzes the trope of bad being cool and how the bad guys deal with fear, insecurity, denial, and self-loathing. And they both rave about how cool the animation is. This movie drips cool! Go to https://betterhelp.com/cinematherapy for a 10% discount on your first month of therapy with a licensed professional specific to your needs. How do you build healthy, compatible relationships? How do you find confidence and love yourself? Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are serving up a Valentine’s Day special, weed rats… No, Shrek! It’s movie couple therapy! They compare Shrek and Fiona’s meeting with traditional fairytale tropes. They discuss how Shrek learns to value connection, while Fiona learns to accept herself, and they become conformable and compatible together. Or as Alan says, they revel in their crapulence. The early 2000s animation may not hold up well, but the story sure does. Who wants a movie couple therapy on Shrek and Fiona’s marriage? Support us! We all know Regina George is a "mean girl" but she's definitely not the only one being manipulative and mean in Mean Girls.
